FLAX happy album cover

FLAX HAPPY album cover. Purchase the album on amplifier.co.nz or listen to a preview here.

We signed off the artwork today, they are making the discs this Friday and the beautiful all-card package next week (designed by Nick Eagles who did Little Death), just in time for us to have them for sale at our launch gig on 22 May at the Dogs Bollix!! There might even be some in the shops by Tuesday 20 May!

This is what we’re emailing about. So on Thursday 22 May, if you’re in Auckland, come party with us from early (8pm) for the long awaited launch of the great new album FLAX HAPPY ! We are very excited. Alan Pitts will open with some magical saw playing (you really have to hear this to believe!) followed by STEVE ABEL & THE CHRYSALIDS for a visceral set of songs, and the night will round out with the brilliant VOOM while we all have a bubbly with you! It will really be as early and glorious as we promised.

Pre-sales only $15 available from Cheese On Toast (will cost more on the night). Email: ticket@cheeseontoast.co.nz with ABEL in the subject line. Include your full name and how many tickets you wish to purchase. They will reply with bank details and further instructions.

Please come along – or if you’re out of Auckland request our new album from your local CD shop. We’re very proud of the album and hope you’ll buy copies for yourself and friends and tell everyone you know all about it and we hope to play in a town near you very soon!

Awesome,
Steve and the band

Sally and good things...

Date:
15/03/2008 - 12:08

Tena koe to the new subscribers from all over!

We had a wonderful tour to your places in the Southern Isle and Wellington (band all still raving about it!). Thanks a lot for having us, coming to the gigs and for joining up.

We promise to send you irregular, brief informative things about gigs, releases etc. This mail is about our new song release “Sally”; gigs in the north; your help with radio; and the new album release date so a little longer than normal.

Nick Abbott who mixed our first album Little Death has done a rollicking mix of one of our old favourites “Sally” from his home in London. you can listen to it here… http://www.myspace.com/steveabelband

“Dunedin” Dale Cotton did a superb job of recording the forthcoming album Flax Happy on which Sally and 11 other new recordings will feature – look out for release in April / May sometime (we’ll let you know exactly closer). Politely asking when the new Steve Abel album is out at your local CD shop is helpful too (thanks).

Upcoming Auckland gigs are:
Steve solo at the Te Puawaitanga fundraising Art Auction tomorrow (Sunday 16 March), 1pm at Newton Central School Hall in Grey Lynn. http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/AK0803/S00086.htm

Steve solo with George & Queen and Reb Fountain on Thursday 27 March, 8pm at the Dogs Bollix in Auckland 8.30pm.

Steve plays solo support for Canadian song smith Hayden at the Whammy Bar on Friday 28 March (this will be a treat!) tickets only $25. from Real Groovy Records. http://nickystardust.blogspot.com/2008/03/hayden.html

Steve accompanied by accordion Gareth at 2pm at the Little Day Out fundraising gig on Saturday 5 April, at Westmere School. Flanked by Don McGlashan and Dave McCartney at 1.30 and 3pm respectively. Only $20 for a great afternoon…

Love to see you at any or all of these!

The student, b net and local radio stations are our best supporters but they are much lead by their listeners so if you have a minute to request “Sally” by Steve Abel (& The Chrysalids) – online (very quick) or by email – thanks alot! If you find it strangely satisfying (which I do) you can do it every week for ages.

A song, a name and good gigs!

Happy new years et ceteras,

The first offering from the impending album Flax Happy is Sad Girls.

You can free download it at myspace, and even better, witness its live rendition alongside a blossom of other great songs. Sad Girls is described as a reflective but uplifting and brief (3:03 mins) homage to melancholic women... Click here to listen and download:

Steve Abel Band & Broken Heartbreakers

Date:
30/11/2007 - 21:01

the last scheduled appearance of the Steve Abel Band this year…

Here’s how they billed it…

Heartbreaker Alert!

THIS FRIDAY 30th NOVEMBER
at the DOG'S BOLLIX
Kick off at 9 PM SHARP
$15

The Broken Heartbreakers Album Release Show

Graham Reid said…
With a sound which draws equally on the Left Banke, the Everly Brothers, Brian Wilson, Beatles and alt.country harmonies, and the Anglofolk tradition this Auckland group can hardly fail.
In songwriter John Guy Howell they also have someone with a genuine gift, and the arrangements here -- minimal guitars, a lovely drone quality in Angels, mellotron and mandolin -- are utterly seductive.
Mike Irwin from Dunedin described them thus, and it is perfect: "It's country music for the bus downtown, spiritual music for top-shelf believers, psychedelic music for those on a come down".
It is also intelligent, heartfelt, aching and entrancing.
Wonderful album.

With gracious support from:

The Steve Abel Band
“Arrant musical hypnosis” – William Dart
Described by the New Zealand Herald as a "kiwi supergroup," with a potent alternative and pop pedigree. Members draw their lineage from the likes of Bressa Creeting Cake and the Brunettes though to the quirky synth pop of Goodshirt and present day incarnations Pluto and Goldenhorse. Abel's influence, with his elegiac ballads and rolling 6/8 rhythms, defines this rich collaboration as completely unique.
Check out more info on Steve and crew at www.abelsong.com

Simon Comber
Simon Comber has long been a favourite of the Broken Heartbreakers and we're once again grateful to be playing with this dangerously talented songwriter. He's got pedals and he knows how to use em.
Check out more info at http://www.myspace.com/simoncomber

For those of you with baby sitters and time keepers in your midst, the running order will be:
9.20 Simon Comber
10.02 The Steve Abel Band
10.40 The Broken Heartbreakers
With a closing number to end all closing numbers....

Abel + Hannah + Vietnam War + Kristen Hersh

Abel, Curwood, Vietnam War @ Whammy
Date:
06/10/2007 - 21:01

Hello again or for the first time!

you should come to our gig on the Saturday night (6 oct 07) at the Whammy Bar (our first ever there!).

Whammy’s in St Kevins Arcade on K Rd where Calibre used to be (not that one ever went there). It all kicks off after 9 and will be well finished in time for thugby.

We are playing (Gareth and Steve that is) with the brilliant Hannah Curwood all the way from Dunedin, and the brilliant Vietnam War from Howick (I don’t know where they’re from really).

It’s a winner and really you should come.

then later come (the following Sunday 14 oct) to our little support for the gargantuan Kristen Hersh from the great land of patrimony (US).

read the wonderfully typo filled Tidball interview…

http://www.cheeseontoast.co.nz/features/20070930KHERSH.htm

Murder, Misery and Then Goodnight…an excerpt…

Kristin Hersh: I used to set myself on fire all the time - not on purpose, but it was for a year - I had like a fire-year- my husband can vouch for this, he wasn't married to at the time, so he was still evaluating me as a life partner, but honestly I was in flames for the better part of, I dunno what year that was Nineteen-Ninety-Something... I dunno if it was the way I dressed, or because i was trying to make candle-lit dinners to impress my new boyfriend, or it was my first gas stove. But other people set me on fire too - it wasn't always my fault!

but the gig this Sat will be the one for really seeing us ya know…
